CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT AND REVIEW

The MSAD 15 Board of Directors recognizes the value of and need for a systematic ongoing process of curriculum development and review. The curriculum ensures the efficiency and effectiveness of the educational program. The Board encourages and supports the professional staff in its efforts to investigate new curricular ideas, to develop and improve programs and to evaluate results. This policy is intended to ensure quality control of curriculum and to be responsive to community and State requirements.

The curriculum is the blueprint for the educational program, guiding instruction while allowing flexibility for teacher creativity and the needs of individual students. While curriculum is written for a single subject area, instruction integrates a variety of subjects, showing students interrelationships and making connections across subjects. The curriculum is intended to be a well-conceived whole, sequential in nature without unnecessary repetition. It is aligned with MaineÕs Learning Results, the District Vision and District outcomes. It is inclusive as required by affirmative action. It is designed to be appropriate to the developmental level of students, and to challenge them to advance to the next level of development. The comprehensive assessment system (Policy ILA Assessment of Student Achievement) measures the effectiveness of the curriculum as well as student progress on the curriculum. Teacher evaluation (Policy GCOA Teacher Evaluation) provides accountability for individual teacher implementation of the approved curriculum.

Curriculum in each subject is reviewed every five years. The Director of Curriculum & Staff Development is responsible for the process of curriculum development and review. Curriculum is developed by professional staff under the guidance of the Director of Curriculum & Staff Development, and is approved by the Board prior to implementation. There is opportunity for public comment on curriculum prior to Board action. At any time parents with concerns about curriculum can contact the Director of Curriculum & Staff Development, who will decide whether to bring a change to the Board as a result. The Board is committed to providing resources to develop, implement and evaluate curriculum, in compliance with Policy IJJ Selection of Educational Resources.
