Re: 07-08 Technology Committee End-of-Year Report
The Technology Committee met throughout 07-08 to discuss technology issues for the district. The Technology Subcommittee was divided into three distinct groupings: Instruction, Infrastructure and Administration. The committee was comprised of Karen Caprio representing Instruction, Craig Moore representing Infrastructure, Dan Joseph representing Administration, Tod Bennett representing the School Board, Stephanie Enaire representing the Gray-New Gloucester Teachers, and Vicky Burns, Superintendent. The committee met the 4th Thursday of each month.
The committee was divided this way as a vehicle to answer specific technology questions as they relate to the much broader Technology Plan.
Much of the committee’s time was spent on discussing budgetary issues for technology such as leasing vs. purchasing, file storage for students and staff, moving the district from PowerSchool to Infinite Campus as well as spam blocking, and network traffic monitoring.
The committee had a broader discussion on student email and the chat feature of FirstClass. At this time we are not providing student email/chat. However, we remain committed to continuing the discussion of using these tools as the needs arise on an individual basis for classroom/instructional use.
The district has continued to use technology as a tool to work more effectively and efficiently. Notable improvements this year have been the installation of smartboards for the science department at GNGHS, Fastt Math at Dunn School, Leap Frog at the K-2 schools, Studywiz, Moodle, and Noteshare at the MS/HS. We have provided excellent staff development for these tools, and we remain committed to additional professional development in the area of technology as teachers identify specific needs.
As we look to the future, we will be working to implement SchoolMessenger and Infinite Campus. Both of these systems will require significant time and attention to ensure successful implementation.
